Lapland Arctic Char

Arctic char can be enjoyed all year round, and ours is always ultra-fresh.

Clean, cold water makes for great fish

The Arctic char, or Salvelinus in Latin, is a salmonid fish that thrives best in cold, oxygen-rich mountain waters. There are several subspecies of the fish, and the one we farm is the mountain char Salvelinus alpinus, specifically the large char type originally from Lake Hornavan. This strain has been developed over a long period, resulting in the Arctic Superior stock. The fish can weigh up to ten kilos but is typically farmed to weights under one kilo.

What does the fish look like?

The Lapland Arctic char has small scales with light spots on a green-silver background, and its fins are orange-red with white edges. The striking red belly color becomes especially prominent during spawning. The flesh has a light red to red color and a fine texture. It’s delicious, too.

What does Lapland Arctic char eat?

Just like other farmed animals such as chicken, pork, and beef, our fish are fed with specially formulated feed. Unlike mammals, fish have an exceptional ability to efficiently convert feed into meat. Our feed supplier guarantees 100% traceability and is continuously working to make the feed more plant-based. Since farmed fish don’t need to hunt for their food, they require significantly less feed than their wild counterparts. Our long-term goal is for our Arctic char to convert 1 kg of feed into 1 kg of fish.

Facts

The origin of the Arctic char

All our facilities are located in Swedish Lapland, in what is often called Europe’s last wilderness. The waterways here contain some of the purest water in the world. For Arctic char, which thrives in cold, oxygen-rich waters, the conditions are perfect! Our Arctic char is farmed for most of its life in the large mountain lake Malgomaj, which stretches over 70 km and reaches depths of around 100 meters at its deepest points.

What does Arctic char eat?

Just like most other farmed animals—such as chicken, pork, and beef—our fish are fed with specially developed feed. However, what sets fish apart from mammals is their significantly more efficient ability to convert feed into meat. Our ambition and goal is for our Arctic char to convert feed at a 1:1 ratio—meaning 1 kg of feed becomes 1 kg of fish. Farmed fish also require much less feed than wild fish, as they do not need to hunt for their food.

Our feed supplier ensures 100% traceability and is continuously working to improve the feed by increasing the proportion of plant-based ingredients.

New Research in Service of the Fish

We have always had a strong interest in research and technology and are involved in various projects related to fish farming and aquaculture. For example, we actively participate in breeding programs for Arctic char. Currently, we are also involved in the development of semi-closed systems, where partially enclosed net pens are used to capture excess nutrients in future fish farms. This new production method is expected to help prevent potential nutrient surpluses from entering our waterways.
