Umlax From Then to Now
Fish farming began on a small scale over 30 years ago, with a focus on both research and business from the very start. Today, we have more than 40 employees spread across six facilities in southern Lapland. Our team is a good mix of academics and skilled professionals who always do their utmost for both the fish and the customer. Umlax is the market leader in the Nordic countries for Arctic char and primarily sells to wholesalers, processing plants, and larger smokehouses worldwide.
A Stable Ownership Structure
Nature and fishing attracted the founder and owner, Josef Nygren, already as a child. As a newly graduated zooecologist in 1987, he began farming rainbow trout together with his partner Kenneth Klintefelt. Even then, and later when the Arctic char farming started, the company combined a research perspective with business acumen. Since then, progress has been rapid. Umlax is a thriving company with five production facilities and one processing plant in southern Lapland. Currently, we hold a farming permit for 3,000 tons and continuously seek new permits. The demand for sustainably produced food is high, which means we see a need to grow quickly to meet demand, especially in the Nordic region. To safely and securely carry out this expansion, Umlax welcomed a new co-owner in 2023, represented by Calle Franklin, who has strong local ties and shares our values and vision. Our customers describe us as unpretentious, positive, and solution-oriented. We think that fits us pretty well.
